Maila in the Herefordshire countryside

About

Hi, I'm Maila

From the Philippines to Singapore, across the world's oceans, to the United States — and now, home in Herefordshire.

Maila, writer and founder of Herefordshire Finds

A life lived in motion

My journey has taken me from a small town in the Philippines to Singapore, across the world's oceans, to the United States, and now to the beautiful county of Herefordshire. Through every move, I discovered that exploring new places isn't just about travel — it's about finding belonging, building community, and creating a life that feels like home. Herefordshire Finds and Beyond is where I share authentic recommendations, hidden gems and meaningful stories to inspire your own adventures.

What I believe

The values behind this site

01

Authentic experiences

I only write about places I've genuinely visited and loved. No shortcuts, no sponsored opinions dressed as honest ones. If it's here, it's because it moved me in some way — and I think it will move you too.

02

Community & connection

Travel, at its best, is about people. I believe in supporting local businesses, celebrating the makers and growers and hoteliers who do things properly, and finding the human stories behind the places we visit.

03

Slow & meaningful travel

The best way to know a place is to stay longer than you planned. To eat where the locals eat, walk the paths that aren't on the tourist maps, and let the rhythm of somewhere new settle into you before you try to describe it.

The story

The longer version

I grew up in a small town in the Philippines — the kind of place that feels both endlessly familiar and quietly full of possibility. From a young age I was drawn to the idea of elsewhere: other languages, other landscapes, other ways of living. That curiosity took me to Singapore, then onto ships crossing the world's oceans, and eventually to the United States, where I lived for several years and built a life I was proud of.

But something kept pulling me further. I'd always been drawn to the quieter corners of the world — the places that don't make the headlines, that haven't been polished into postcards, that reward the traveller who takes the time to look properly. Herefordshire was one of those places. I arrived almost by accident, and I never quite left.

Herefordshire Finds started as a private notebook — a record of the walks I was doing, the markets I was browsing, the restaurants and hotels and hidden valleys I wanted to remember. At some point it became a website, and then it became something people actually read. I'm still a little surprised by that, and very grateful for it.

This site is more than a travel blog to me. It's the foundation for something I've been building towards for a long time: a trusted voice for people who want to travel with intention, discover places that feel genuinely special, and find a little of what I found here — a sense of belonging, and the quiet joy of feeling at home somewhere new.

"Progress over perfection. Every great journey begins with the courage to publish the first page."

This website is the beginning of something larger — a lifestyle brand built on authentic storytelling, meaningful partnerships, and a deep love of place. The long-term vision includes travel guides, brand collaborations, speaking opportunities, and one day, a memoir. But it starts here, with honest writing and a genuine love of Herefordshire.
